Wheat: Anti-Cancer, Antioxidants, Phytochemicals

Whole grain wheat is a great food that's full of nutrients. Wheat is inexpensive & easy to prepare raw or cooked. If you buy wheat from the bulk bins & re-use your bags, there's no wasteful packaging.

Wheat Supplies multiple antoxidants: IP-6, orthophenols, phenolics, flavonoids, abscisic acid, ferulic acid, vanillic acid, carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-cryptoxanthin), selenium, zinc, and vitamin E.

Wheat Germ

The germ is the part of the seed that would grow into a new plant. Wheat germ is high in Vitamin E & essential fatty acids. The proportion of Omega-3 to Omega-6 in whole wheat is very good, so eating wheat is a great way to get your EFAs.

Wheat Bran

Whole wheat is high in insoluble fiber, which is more protective against colon cancer than soluble fiber. Wheat bran is especially good at preventing colon cancer.

Ferulic acid is an antioxidant that is abundant in wheat bran. When rats were fed wheat bran, their blood actually showed better antioxidant activity than when they were given ferulic acid supplements. The ferulic acid stayed in their blood longer, and less of it was excreted in their urine. Nutrients in ordinary plant foods have synergistic effects. The whole is greater than the parts.

Lignans are a type of insoluble fiber that's abundant in flax seeds and whole grains.

Phenolics are anti-cancer phytochemicals that are found in whole grains. Wheat with higher amounts of phenolics has higher anti-cancer effects. This shows that it's not just the high fiber content that makes whole grains effective against cancer. Diets that are high in fiber, but omit whole grains, may not be as protective.

Phytic acid, aka phytate, aka IP-6, is one of the most powerful antioxidants found in foods. Some nutritionally-oriented cancer researchers think that IP-6 is probably the most powerful natural anti-cancer sustances. IP-6 is found in grains, beans, nuts & seeds. Wheat is especially high in this cancer fighter.

Phytic acid works differently than other antioxidants. Most antioxidants circulate in the bloood, stopping free radicals there. Phytate has the unique ability to work inside your cells, stopping free radicals that are formed duringthe normal process of cell metabolism. © Jordan Rothstein <jordan at>
